Success Stories

Success Stories:
The Impact Of “Outside-The-Box Learning”

Here is how we have helped these children with individually-tailored tutoring. Meet Kate, Bryan, Nathan, Haley, Lucas, and Ana. We are so proud of them!

Kate’s Story (Year 3)
– Improved Despite Severe Learning Difficulties

KATE’S LEARNING DIFFICULTY

Kate has acute eyesight issues and suffers from severe “Visual Stress” and other learning difficulties. She was a very shy, quiet student who was left alone in school classes. She found school work very difficult and overwhelming.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

  • Used large size fonts so she could see them
  • Used yellow paper because the words appear “fuzzy” to her on white paper
  • Loved to draw, so she often draws a picture and then writes a story about it
  • Encouraged her to regularly show off her work to other tutors and students

KATE NOW

Kate now has a great attitude towards her work whenever she comes into tutoring. She always comes into tutoring with a smile and is excited and happy to see everyone. She is starting to feel more confident in her school classroom, too!

Bryan’s Story (Year 11)
– Study Skills & Goal-Setting

BRYAN'S LEARNING DIFFICULTY

Bryan was feeling the pressure of adjusting to Year 11, and wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to get out of tutoring. He was feeling lost and had no goals for what to do with his life after school. Bryan lacked motivation and time management skills.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

  • Bryan starts each session with a friendly chat with his tutor about his hobbies.
  • Bryan has found an interest in studying literature when he leaves school.
  • Time management skills were crucial for Bryan – creating retains for his assignments.
  • Improving essay skills and learning how to show ‘critical thinking’ in assignments.

BRYAN NOW

Bryan now has a clearer direction in life and a goal to work towards. He has been able to learn to manage his time carefully with all the different priorities he has had to juggle. He’s more proud of himself and he’s now got a part time job.

Nathan’s Story (Year 1)
– Overcame Learning Difficulties & Improved Attitude

NATHAN'S LEARNING DIFFICULTY

Nathan was a whole year behind in his abilities due to his learning difficulties. He was “held back” to repeat this current year at school. He found school boring and liked to cause trouble, instead of focusing on his reading and writing.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

  • Nathan loved Spiderman so we used that as a tool to get him reading and writing.
  • Writing focused on doing short activities to keep him enthusiastic.
  • Gave him enormous variety – sometimes up to 10 activities each session.
  • Nathan loves to show off his work to older students and they give him fun stickers.

NATHAN NOW

His delighted parents and teachers can hardly believe how much progress he’s made.  His attitude towards school has completely turned around. Impressive!

Haley’s Story (Year 9)
– Learning Issues & Super-Low Confidence

HALEY’S LEARNING DIFFICULTY

Haley is extremely shy, with some learning issues, and was very under-confident in her abilities. She came to tutoring looking initially for Math’s help as she had been struggling at school.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

  • Haley was paired with another very gentle student (because she felt intimidated around other children).
  • Focused on skills that Haley was learning in class to make school easier.
  • Showed her how to use the ‘worked examples’ in her school textbook when feeling ‘stuck’.
  • Built confidence by covering content slowly before moving onto the next topic.

HALEY NOW

Haley now has more independence in her own work, and she is willing to try things without help. Haley has been coming out of her shell and her confidence has grown. She now comes into tutoring with a smile and will tell you how her week has been.

Ana’s Story (Year 7)
– Recovered Confidence After Severe School Bullying

ANA’S LEARNING DIFFICULTY

Ana has suffered from bullying at a previous school and came to us just after starting at a new school, with some difficult learning issues. She had very low confidence and self-esteem and often worried about her schoolwork.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

  • Ana really ‘clicked’ with her first female tutor, so we made sure she always worked with female tutors.
  • Discovered that Ana suffers from “Visual Stress” so blue paper was used to make words appear clearer.
  • We showed Mum helpful strategies to help Ana overcome her learning difficulties
  • During school assessment weeks, we helped Ana learn study skills and homework routines.

ANA NOW

Ana enjoys school again and feels more bold and willing to knock over her assessment tasks. She comes to tutoring every week excited and eager to do work.  She feels valued and loved.

Lucas’ Story (Year 5)
– English as a Second Language

LUCAS’ LEARNING DIFFICULTY

Lucas has had to learn English since his arrival in Australia a few years ago, which created real learning issues for him. He lacked the writing skills for upper primary and was shy to engage in conversations.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

  • Lucas needed lots of focus on phonics for spelling to help catch up.
  • We created spelling and writing games appropriate for his older age so he didn’t feel silly.
  • Helped him use correct grammar in spoken language, because he loves to chat.
  • To help him focus, we set goals for the term that Lucas wanted to achieve.

LUCAS NOW

Lucas always comes in to tutoring eager to have a chat and is more outgoing than before. He’s happier at school. We are so proud of Lucas!
